Save on Groceries with Coupons

Seven Simple Ways To Save on Groceries

Who doesn't want to save money on groceries?  Even if you use online coupons to save on food, it can still be a challenge as food coupons are not as common as non-food coupons. Here are some tips for slashing your grocery budget.

1) Have a Plan

Go through all the ads and look at what is on sale. Make a list of the things you want to purchase. If you are planning on using coupons, then put together the ones you know you want to use, so you don't have to hunt as you go; match them up to the sale items and have them ready to go.

2) Plan Around The Sales

Meal planning is wise but can lead to pricey purchases if you plan meals and then go shopping. Instead, shop the sales and make your menu around that. If chicken is on sale, then you go with your chicken recipes. If ham leftover from the holidays is on clearance, then plan around that. It only takes a few minutes to research some dishes that will go with what's on sale.

3) Check Unit Prices

Many people shop places like Sam's Club thinking bigger is better but always check unit prices. A big box doesn't necessarily mean a small price tag. Even at the local grocery store, you will often find the bigger bottle costs a penny or two more than the smaller one.

4) Buy In Bulk

Sometimes it can pay to buy in bulk. Things like, rice, beans, and pasta are good examples. If you have a small family ask another family to share your purchase with and you both save. Sugar, flour, and baking supplies are often much cheaper in bulk as well.

5) Learn What Things Cost

One of the best ways to save is to learn the average cost of things. If you know hamburger runs $2.99 when not on sale, then you see $1.49 per lb is an excellent price. If you shop specific stores, then learn what their typical costs are for things you buy all the time.

6) Stock Up On A Good Sale

You hear all the time about not clearing the shelves on a good sale. But if you see a fantastic deal on something you buy all the time, like toilet paper, definitely buy what you will use over time. Stores restock during a sale and purchase extra if it's a hot sale.  Things like pasta, chips or cookies can be frozen to keep longer.

7) Look For Mark Down Items

The first thing you should do when you enter a grocery store for any reason is to walk the perimeter. Look for marked-down produce first then move on to the meats. Ask the clerk if there is a particular time of the week they mark down meat. You can score BIG savings this way. You can cook it right away or pop in the freezer. Most stores have an area for marked-down bread and baked goods, where it is possible never to pay full price for bagels, doughnuts, etc.

Saving on groceries can be challenging, but you can do it with some planning. Once you know what to look for, you can make the most of your shopping experience.
